Hello and welcome to my corner of the internet! I’m thrilled to share one of my all-time favorite DIY skincare recipes with you today: a luxurious Shampoo Ginger Whipped Body Butter.
Shampoo ginger is native to Southeast Asia and commonly grown in Hawaii. It belongs to the ginger family just like turmeric and galangal. It’s renowned for its vibrant cone-shaped flower heads that release a fragrant liquid. This liquid is valued for its incredible moisturizing and soothing capabilities, making it an ideal addition to nourishing skincare products like this whipped body butter.
If you're interested in growing your own shampoo ginger, I’ve got guides on how to grow it over on my Jerra's Garden YouTube channel HERE. Plus, since I run a seed and plant nursery, you can purchase shampoo ginger plants directly from my website HERE. Shampoo ginger hydrates the skin beautifully, packed with natural components that can reduce inflammation and leave your skin soft and glowing. Traditionally, Hawaiians have used the shampoo ginger liquid as a skin moisturizer, making it an excellent ingredient for its properties.

What You'll Need
- 5 ounces of raw, unrefined Shea butter (from Amazon HERE).
- 1.5 ounces of freshly harvested shampoo ginger liquid
- a few drops of your favorite essential oils or about 1 TSP of fragrance oils (optional)
- Four-ounce jars for storage (from Amazon HERE).
- A hand mixer or KitchenAid mixer (from Amazon HERE).
- A small pot and a metal bowl that fits over the top to create a double boiler.
Directions
Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients
Once you have all your ingredients ready, let's start by setting up a double boiler. Fill a small pot with water and bring it to a boil. Place a metal bowl over it and add the shea butter, stirring occasionally until it melts. Transfer the melted shea butter to a mixing bowl, allowing it to cool for at least 20 minutes before you start whisking it.
Step 2: Whip the Shea Butter
A KitchenAid mixer works fantastically because I can multitask while it whips the shea butter. If the melted shea butter oil is too hot, it won't whip into a stiff, fluffy texture. If you've been whisking for about 5 minutes without a change in consistency, it's still too hot. Let it cool down and try again. The texture will change from a clear liquid to creamy white as it whips, akin to whipping egg whites. You'll know it's ready when the peaks hold their shape after removing the whisk. If it deflates after a few minutes, let it cool a little more and whisk further. Properly mixed, it won't deflate.
Step 3: Final Touches
Now its time to add optional essential oils or fragrance oils. Start mixing the whipped shea butter, gradually adding any essential or fragrance oils you prefer. I enjoy using a fragrance oil called Avobath Boost from Indigo Fragrances for this recipe found HERE.
Step 4: Jar and Enjoy
Fill your four-ounce jars with the completed shampoo ginger body butter. This recipe yields enough for two 4oz jars with a bit left over. You can double or triple this recipe to make more at once! It should maintain its shape, lasting several weeks at room temperature. This homemade butter is perfect for moisturizing and revitalizing your skin, and best of all, it's completely natural.
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and feel inspired to create your own DIY skincare products at home.
