Make Your Own DIY Shelf-Stable Shampoo Ginger Hair Shampoo

Today, I'm excited to share with you a wonderful recipe for making your own shelf-stable shampoo ginger hair shampoo. Shampoo ginger, also known as awapuhi, is a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia, commonly grown in Hawaii. Part of the ginger family, like turmeric and galangal, shampoo ginger is celebrated for its bright cone-shaped flower heads that produce a fragrant liquid.

Why I Love Shampoo Ginger

This liquid, renowned for its mild sudzing properties, serves as a natural shampoo and conditioner. Shampoo ginger liquid is popular in hair care for its ability to smooth hair, reduce frizz, and repair damage. It also nourishes the scalp, reduces dandruff, and is believed to stimulate hair follicles, promoting natural hair growth. Traditionally, Hawaiians use freshly squeezed shampoo ginger for skin hydration and soothing, offering a natural remedy for both hair and skincare.

Making Shelf-Stable Shampoo Ginger Hair Shampoo

Alright, let's dive into making this quick and easy shelf-stable shampoo ginger hair shampoo! By shelf-stable, I mean it should last for several months at room temperature.

Harvesting Fresh Shampoo Ginger

First, harvest some fresh shampoo ginger liquid. My plants bloom all summer long, so I simply step outside and squeeze the flower cones to collect the liquid in a bowl. This liquid has a lovely floral ginger scent.

Ingredients

3 cups of strained fresh shampoo ginger liquid

3 cups of castile liquid soap base

3 TBS vegetable glycerin

3 TSP of jojoba oil

2 TSP of Argan oil

Choice of essential oil. I like rosemary essential oil since it promotes hair growth.

Choice of fragrance oils. I like to use a fragrance oil called Lemongrass & Green Tea which you can find HERE

Cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer

16 oz pump bottles

Mixing bowls

Whisk

All of these ingredients and supplies can be found on my Amazon list HERE.

Directions

1. Start by straining the shampoo ginger liquid through cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer. I'm using a very fine mesh painter’s bag, but cheesecloth works too. The liquid's color ranges from clear to a honey-brown, which is perfectly normal.

2. Next, I mix 3 cups of strained shampoo ginger liquid with 3 cups of castile liquid soap base in a bowl.

3. Add 3 TBS of vegetable glycerin, 3 TSP of jojoba oil, and 2 TSP of argan oil. Mix everything gently.

4. The next additions are optional, but I love them. You can add a few drops of essential oils; I prefer rosemary essential oil because it helps with hair growth. Lastly, I like to add a few drops of quality fragrance oil for a wonderful scent. My favorite fragrance oils come from a website called Indigo Fragrance. I add enough essential oil and fragrance oil until I can smell it very well when mixed with the hair shampoo. Mix everything gently.

5. Pour the hair shampoo in some empty bottles. I like to use 16-ounce plastic pump bottles, and it's ready for use.

This shampoo is very safe and gentle. All the ingredients I use are non-toxic to pets, making it a perfect all-natural shampoo for my dog.

Lastly, if you're interested in growing shampoo ginger yourself, not only do I have guides on how to grow this plant on my Jerra's Garden YouTube channel HERE, but I also sell plants on my website HERE, as I run a seed and plant nursery.
