Katuk, scientifically known as Sauropus androgynus, is a tropical perennial plant renowned for its distinctive heart-shaped leaves and rich nutritional profile. Originating from Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, Katuk has established itself as a staple in various Asian cuisines and traditional medicine. The plant is characterized by its rapid growth, making it a popular choice for home gardens and sustainable agriculture. Plants grow quickly providing a lot of edible biomass in permaculture and food forest types settings. Katuk leaves contains a notable amount of protein, making it a beneficial addition to a balanced diet, particularly for individuals looking to increase their protein intake from plant-based sources. Leaves are best eaten when harvested young and have a flavor similar to peas.

The young, tender leaves of the Katuk plant are the primary focus of its culinary use. Often referred to as "sweet leaf" due to their mild and slightly sweet flavor, these leaves are enjoyed raw in salads, added to stir-fries, or incorporated into smoothies for a nutrient-packed boost. Beyond its culinary applications, Katuk is valued for its medicinal properties in traditional practices, believed to possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. With its ability to thrive in diverse climates, Katuk has become a global favorite among gardeners and health-conscious individuals seeking a unique, flavorful, and nutritious addition to their daily diet.

Growing Conditions
USDA Hardiness Zones: 9-12
Does not like cold temperatures. Ideal temperature range is 75-85°F.
Perennial/Semi-Evergreen
Sun: Full sun and partial shade
Soil: Everything grows best in soil that is heavy in composted organic matter BUT this plant grows just fine in a variety of soils without amendments, like my native Florida sandy soil.
Fertilizer: Fertilize young plants to encourage lots of healthy growth with about 1/8 cup of Espoma Garden Tone every 1.5 months. Once plants are established, I barely fertilize. I'll throw some fertilizer its way a few times a year, starting in spring to help "wake" up the plant.
