INCLUDED IN THIS SEED COLLECTION

1. Blue Lake - Blue Lake bush beans is a classic heirloom string bean. It is a popular varitey grown around the world because ity handles a wide range of conditions. In fact, it was the very first bean I ever grew. They sprout and grow into bushy plants very quickly. Since it is a bush bean, no supports or trellis is needed. I really love growing it in my GreenStalk garden planter or underneath bigger veggie crops like tomatoes and eggplants. Blue Lake bush beans start producing about 55 days from direct sowing the seeds.

2. Dragon Tongue - This is and old Dutch heirloom variety of bush bean. Pods are a creamy yellow color with beautiful purple streaks. Pods get around 5-7 inches long and are wide and flat. Definitely a unique looking bush bean.  This is a bush bean, meaning it grows into compact bushes which is great for small gardens. No need for trellising. Pods are stringless and tender. You can harvest the pods before the beans inside swell to use like snap beans. Or let the pods dry out and harvest the beans for storage.  I highly recommend bush beans for beginner gardeners as they are easy, grow quickly, and produce something edible by the 2 month mark.

3. Golden Wax - Probably the most beautiful and tender bush bean variety I currently grow in my own gardens. This variety usually starts producing at around 50 days from direct sowing the seeds into the ground. It starts producing ahead of the traditional green varieties. This is a bush bean, meaning it grows into compact bushes which is great for small gardens. No need for trellising. Pods are stringless, tender, and gorgeous when cooked. This variety is also known as "Topnotch". I highly recommend bush beans for beginner gardeners as they are easy, grow quickly, and produce something edible by the 2 month mark.

4. Purple Podded - These gorgeous deep purple podded beans are sure to catch your eye in the garden and dinner plate. The purple color makes them easy to spot on the vines for harvesting. I like to harvest them below 8 inches long. Pods are flat and wide like Romano style pole beans. The entire pod is edible and has a crisp texture. The purple color is due to high quantities of an antioxidant called anthocyanins. The color does disappear when exposed to heat such as cooking. Therefore, I like to prepare in raw recipes to take advantage of the unique color. Pole beans are vining type beans that grow best on a trellis. I follow square foot gardening guidelines but planting 9 seeds per every square foot.

5. Roma or Romano II - I love these bush beans! Romano type beans are flat and wide. They are and best harvested when pods are 8-10 inches long. These are stringless even at 10 inches long. The entire pod is edible and has a very crisp texture. They are juicy and have a flavor that reminds me of cucumber and green beans put together (in a very good way). I follow square foot gardening guidelines but planting 9 seeds per every square foot.

6. Rattlesnake Pole Beans - This is my favorite pole bean variety to grow! Gorgeous long green pods with purple streaks. Harvest regularly when the pods are plump but before the beans inside start to swell which will keep the vines producing all season long. Tolerates high heat and humidity. Needs trellising/poles to grow on.
