Learn how to grow green beans from seed all the way to harvest with my YouTube video tutorial: https://youtu.be/Mj5U3L7Qadw

Blue Lake bush beans is a classic heirloom string bean. It is a popular varitey grown around the world because ity handles a wide range of conditions. In fact, it was the very first bean I ever grew. They sprout and grow into bushy plants very quickly. Since it is a bush bean, no supports or trellis is needed. I really love growing it in my GreenStalk garden planter or underneath bigger veggie crops like tomatoes and eggplants. Blue Lake bush beans start producing about 55 days from direct sowing the seeds.

Follow me on social media because I talk a lot about the same seed varieties I sell here in my shop and gardening tips. IG, YT, and TikTok: jerrasgarden.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Sun: Full Sun

Water: Allow the soil to dry out a little bit in-between watering

Fertilizer: Do not fertilize nitrogen affixers like bean crops. An initial application or amendment of an organic granular fertilizer, like Espoma Garden-Tone helps boost seedling growth, but then do not fertilize again.

When & How To Sow Seeds: Direct sowing is preferred after the last frost, when soil temperatures are 70-85ºF. In warmer climates can also direct sow at end of summer for a fall harvest.  Use square foot gardening guidelines to direct sow 9 seeds per square foot. Or direct sow seeds in rows, spacing each seed about 3 inches from each other, in rows that are 12-18 inches apart. Keep the soil moist for better germination.

Germination: 4-10 days

Days To Maturity: 50-70 days after direct sowing the seed

How & When To Harvest: Harvest pods before the beans inside start to swell so much that you can clearly see the outline of each bean through the outside of the pod for best flavor and texture. Snip or pinch the pods off the vine.

Common Diseases: The most common disease is rust, which easily occurs in humid or damp conditions. Improve airflow by proper plant spacing. Spray with 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide per gallon of water to clean and disinfect.

Common Pests: Critters like rabbits love to munch on newly germinated bean seedlings, so protection from small animals might be required. I often find leaves with the edges cut and rolled in. This is damage from beanleaf roller larvae. It is usually not bad enough to where you need to treat for it and can just ignore.

Do I have a YouTube video tutorial on how to grow this? YES
