RARE Blue Turmeric - Starter/Sprouted LIVE Plant

Curcuma caesia

Listing is for 1 starter/sprouted turmeric plant grown in a 4 inch pot The root system is bigger/more developed. The leaves/stems can be 6 inches or longer. If the plant has very long stems, I might have to trim them to fit into the shipping box.

***Please be aware that these are tough plants and cutting the leaves or shipping without the pot is ok, they will bounce right back****

Blue turmeric, also known as black turmeric (Curcuma caesia), is a unique variety of turmeric distinguished by its bluish-black rhizomes. Unlike the more common yellow turmeric (Curcuma longa), blue turmeric has a distinct aroma and a slightly bitter, camphor-like flavor. It is native to India and has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic and folk medicine for its purported health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antioxidant properties. In culinary applications, blue turmeric is less commonly used than yellow turmeric, but it can be incorporated into teas, smoothies, and curries for its unique flavor and potential health benefits.

Turmeric is propagated thru rhizomes and spread just under the soil surface. For this reason I like to plant them in grow bags to control their spread and make harvest easier.  You can start harvesting pieces of rhizome as needed in about 6 to 9 months.

Turmeric is a tropical plant. It is perennial in garden zones +9, or where the ground doesn't freeze. If the ground freezes, it will kill the rhizome. Plant them in containers if your ground freezes and bring in doors once temperatures drop below 50F. Turmeric plants go dormant during the winter and the top vegetative growth will die back. It will start sprouting new growth when spring arrives. Plants can get as tall as 4-5FT. If you bring it in doors, it is ok to cut the stems down if you have to. They thrive in wet soils and shady spots.

How to Plant
I recommend that you plant the plug in a 1 gallon container so you can monitor its growth. Use potting mix or compost. Once it has developed a bigger root system, you can plant outside or pot up.
