Coffea arabica, commonly known as Arabica coffee, is a species of coffee plant that is highly prized for its coffee beans. It is one of the two main species of coffee plants used in commercial coffee production, the other being Coffea canephora, or Robusta coffee. Arabica coffee is known for its superior flavor and aromatic qualities compared to Robusta coffee.
Arabica coffee beans are typically considered to have a milder, more nuanced flavor profile with a range of desirable notes, including floral, fruity, and acidic undertones. They contain less caffeine compared to Robusta beans, making them less bitter and smoother in taste.
This easy-to-care-for tropical plant thrives in "houseplant" conditions. It also boosts beautiful lush green foliage that makes it an attractive decorative plant. Whether you're a coffee enthusiast or simply love the idea of nurturing a unique and beautiful plant, this Coffee Arabica is the perfect addition to your home or garden.
How long will it take to start fruiting? Approximately 2-3 years if grown in ideal conditions.
Growing Conditions
USDA Hardiness Zones: 9 to 11. Colder zones will have to grow in doors like a houseplant during the winter, or in a green house.
Optimal Growing Temperature: 59-75°F. Plants are easily damaged by frost and easily killed by freezing temperatures. Leaf damage can also occur when temperatures exceed 80F.
Perennial
Sun: Partial sun. Coffee plants are understory plants, so mimic those conditions. Plant in a spot that gets bright morning sun but afternoon shade.
Height at maturity: Up to 15FT tall at maturity but you can prune it to the size you prefer
Soil: If growing in a pot, use potting mix with some compost mixed in. If growing outdoors, plant in a mound made of compost.
Water/Moisture/Humidity: Coffee plants like consistent water but not sitting in water for a long period of time because it will cause root rot. They also benefit from high humidity like other houseplants. Putting a dish of water nearby to create more humidity is very beneficial for the plant.
Fertilizer: Use citrus fertilizer. My favorite is Espoma organic granular citrus-tone. Fertilize young trees to encourage lots of healthy growth with about 1/8 cup every 1 to 2 months.
