Yard long beans are so fun to grow and they get over 1 foot long in length. This particular variety is dark green in color with thick, long pods. Yard long beans thrive in hot humid climates. I switch to growing these during our hot and rainy summers here in Florida. They start producing in about 2 months after being direct sowed into the ground and don't require fertilizer. The plants tend to put on a flush of harvestable beans in a 2-3 week period. Then you will notice the plants kind of stop growing for a few weeks. They will bounce back and then put on another second flush of harvestable pods if you let them continue to grow. The second flush is not as much as the first flush but still good. Pinch off the tips of each vine to encourage side branching, which creates more flowers, which in turn increases production of pods. Harvest the pods when they are pencil size in thickness. Flavor is similar to green beans but with a crunchier texture. I like to chop the long pods down to more bite size pieces and stir fry. Pods retain their color once cooked.

PLANTING
Germination: 3-10 days
Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures are 70-85ºF
Seed Sowing Depth: 1” deep
Sowing: Direct sowing is preferred after the last frost. In warmer climates can also direct sow at end of summer for a fall harvest.
Harvest: When pods have pencil thickness, but before the seeds bulge and pods get "airy spaces" in them.
