Papalo - Quilquiña - Papaloquelite - Yerba Porosa - Non-Soapy Flavor Substitute for Cilantro Herb Heirloom Seeds

If you love the taste of cilantro and need a herb that stands up to summer heat, then you must try papalo. I am very impressed that this herb thrives in my hot and humid Florida summer garden when many herbs do not. It is considered a substitute for cilantro if your unable to grow it, or if regular cilantro tastes like soap to you. Plants get very bushy, lush, and green even when growing in full sun. They go to seed after several months of growing, therefore doesn't require constant succession sowing like cilantro. Papalo is native to South America and is called "papaloquelite" which comes from the Aztec word for butterfly, "papalotl." Leaves do not dry or cook well so use this as a fresh garnish or topping over food. Mature leaves have a very strong cilantro like flavor while younger leaves are more mild.

Starting these from seed can be challenging as they do not germinate well if completely covered with soil. Instead, sprinkle the leaves over the soil surface, and gently scratch them in with a fork or garden rake. Then water them in. Keep the soil moist to help speed up germination. Also, bright light helps speed up germination. Once plants are growing in your garden, they easily reseed every where.
