This is a famous traditional type of chili pepper from Rajasthan (Northern India) that was thought to have been extinct. It was discovered in a remote area of a town called Mathania (hence its name). It is a historic and culturally significant pepper that is a key ingredient in many Indian dishes. The long pods start green and then turn a vibrant red when fully ripe. They are known to have a moderate amount of spiciness with a fruity flavor. It is used both fresh and dried to make a paste or powder. They have a Scoville rating of 50,000-80,000, making them spicier than cayenne or tobasco peppers (which have a 50,000 Scoville rating). I found the plants to be very productive and heat tolerant. I don't like spicy foods so I am growing this in effort to preserve this rare pepper cultivar. If your a pepper enthusiasts, please consider growing this cultivar not only for its unique flavor but also to aid in heirloom preservation.

Peppers are slow to germinate and slow to start growing to transplant size. I recommend to start seeds in pots/trays with a heat mat to speed up germination. Then start fertilizing weekly with half strength fertilizer once the first set of true leaves appear. Peppers are similar to tomatoes in that they like plenty of water and are heavy feeders.

Peppers are perennial plants and can produce for several years if taken care of. In cold climates trim off all the leaves and bring in doors in a pot to over winter. Place back out doors once temperatures are nice and warm. In mild climates, pepper plants can be left out doors and might need to be covered on the coldest nights.

PLANTING
Germination: 10-14 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures are 75-85ºF

Seed Sowing Depth: 1/4” deep

Sowing: I highly recommended to start seeds in pots/trays as described above.

Harvest: Peppers start green and then turn red when fully mature. You can harvest them at any color stage but for maximum flavor (and spiciness) wait for them to turn red.
