Red Garnet Amaranth Heirloom Flower & Grain Seeds
Amaranthus tricolour
Listing is for 1 packet, minimum 25 seeds

I started growing amaranth as a food source for my chickens and then fell in love with how showy the blooms are. This variety can get as tall as 6 ft, produces large fluffy crimson red blooms that can be used in floral arrangements, on top of burgundy foliage. Its rather striking in the garden among other plants. It's seeds are edible, gluten free, and can be used as a grain source or to make flower. Others use the seed as a high protein sprouting microgreen.  It's a very productive and versatile plant.

Follow me on social media because I talk a lot about the same seed varieties I sell here in my shop and gardening tips. IG, YT, and TikTok: jerrasgarden.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Sun: Full Sun

Water: Allow the soil to dry out a little bit in-between watering. Established plants are drought tolerant.

Fertilizer: Does not require fertilizer. But you can give it some all purpose fertilizer every now and them to promote lush growth.

When & How To Sow Seeds: The easiest way to grow is to direct sow the seeds after all danger of frost has passed or start in pots 6-8 weeks before your last spring frost date. Sprinkle a few seeds over the soil surface, pat them down so they make contact, cover lightly with 1/4 inch of soil, and water them in. Keep the soil moist and they will germinate quickly. Plants get around 6FT wide and tall at maturity so space them 3FT apart.

Germination: 3-5 days

Days To Maturity: 2 to 3 months after direct sowing the seeds.

How & When To Harvest: Harvest blooms early in the morning for fresh cut flowers. Frequent harvesting and deadheading of spent flowers encourages more blooms. Or let the flower heads dry out and turn brown to shake out the seeds if you want to harvest amaranth grain.

Common Diseases: Amaranth is pretty resistant to diseases. Can get some powdery mildew in very wet conditions. Improve airflow by proper plant spacing. Spray with 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide per gallon of water to clean and disinfect. Sometimes caterpillars/worms like to chew the leaves. Spray with BT or spinosad to treat chewing insects.

Common Pests: The most common pest when growing amaranth is aphids. Use a strong spray of water to dislodge aphids from the leaves. For more severe infestations, spray with organic insecticidal soap or spinosad. Sometimes caterpillars/worms like to chew the leaves. Spray with BT or spinosad to treat chewing insects.

Do I have a YouTube video tutorial on how to grow this? No

Shipping Information

Orders are shipped in 1-3 business days excluding holidays or delays due to natural disasters like hurricanes.

Seeds are shipped in bubble mailers so they will not be pushed through USPS roller machines which can damage the seeds. I will not ship seeds in an envelope for this reason.

Seeds will be shipped with no planting instructions to keep seed costs low to the buyer. Germination and plant care information is included in the description. I encourage each gardener to research specifics on how to be successful growing them. I also have lots of information on my TikTok, Instagram and YouTube channel all under the account name jerrasgarden. I started this shop to share my love of certain seed varieties and spread the knowledge of gardening. Please contact me if you can't find information or have additional questions.

Orders with live plants are packed on Mondays and Thursdays (excluding holidays or delays because of natural disasters. Plants are shipped in boxes with packaging material to protect them while they are in transit.

Refunds & Exchanges

No returns or refunds once shipped. I am not responsible for lost or damaged packages caused by USPS. Since there are so many factors that affect germination and growing success, no refunds or exchanges are allowed once seeds have shipped. These are the same seeds I use in my personal garden so I can attest to their viability. Seeds are fresh season to season.
