Papaya's are an awesome addition to edible gardens, food forests, and permaculture gardens because they produce so much food in a short period of time. Did you know papayas are actually classified as an herb? This Red Lady papaya cultivar has it all! It is a dwarf cultivar perfect for small gardens and containers. It is also one of the highest sugar content cultivars available, so it is known for a sweeter more favorable flavor when compared to others. Plus, it is a self-fertile hybrid with decent disease resistance. These papaya seedlings are started from seed. If grown in ideal conditions, it can start producing in 10 months. Red Lady is a dwarf papaya cultivar, maturing at about 8-10FT.

This is a tropical plant that does not like the cold. Protect smaller/baby plants when temperatures drop below 50F. Once mature and established they can endure a little more cold. Red Lady papayas are cold hardy down to 25F . If your in zones 9B and up, it should survive the winter. Zones 8 and below will need to bring in doors for the winter.

Ideal Growing Conditions
USDA Hardiness Zones: 9B-11
Protect young plants if temperatures drop below 50F. Once established, they can take brief periods of cold down to 32F but expect some leaf damage. The entire plant can die if temperatures drop to 25F and below.
Perennial evergreen - will lose leaves if exposed to too much cold
Sun: Full sun is best for maximum growth and production. Can tolerate some partial shade but production will be decreased.
Soil: Everything grows best in soil that is heavy in composted organic matter BUT this plant grows just fine in a variety of soils without amendments, like my native Florida sandy soil.
Water: Monitor young plants and keep consistent water.
Fertilizer: Not really necessary for mature plants, but for young/smaller plants I recommend mixing in some granular fertilizer into the planting hole.
