Learn how to grow cabbage from seed all the way to harvest with my YouTube video tutorial: https://youtu.be/wE9uMQIoOmc
This cabbage is named after the Savoy region in France where it is very popular. It has a more sweet flavor and doesn't have a sulfur smell when cooked like traditional green heading cabbages. Leaves have a beautiful lace like web pattern and are a little bit more loose when compared to other heading cabbages.
I recommend to start seeds in 72 cell seed trays or 4 inch pots, but they also do well if direct sown once monthly average high temperatures don't exceed 80F. Seedlings are transplanted into the garden once the root system fills the whole cell or pot. At planting time, I add a nice handful of blood meal in each planting hole, which is organic and high in nitrogen. The resulting leaves are lush and deep in color. I also sprinkle some organic granular fertilizer about 1 month later after being transplanted to give them a boost to grow large heads.
I have not experienced much pest issues if grown during the correct time of year which is fall thru spring. Sometimes I get cabbage worms which will munch on the leaves. I use BT or Spinosad to treat for the worms. If I grow these closer to late spring, I get some aphid issues. I have found that if I plant kale and nasturtiums all over my garden, the aphids will feast on them instead. Therefore, I use kale and nasturtiums as a trap crops. I have a Trap Crop seed collection if you want to grow more of the trap crops that I recommend and use in my garden.
