If your in warmer climates where growing spinach is a challenge, try growing Sissoo spinach. Sissoo Spinach, also known as Brazilian Spinach or Sambu Lettuce, is a leafy green that adds a burst of vibrant green to your garden but also provides a tasty and nutrient-rich treat for your plate. It is one of the few leafy greens that thrives in tropical/subtropical regions, still growing and producing leaves even in the middle of a hot Florida summer. Plants grow best in moist but well draining soil and in a spot that gets full morning sun with afternoon shade. Can also be treated like a houseplant and grow in doors. Its crinkled shiny leaves make for an interesting foliage contrast. Sisso spinach does have oxalic acid so if your on a reduced oxalic acid diet, cook the leaves before eating to remove 90% of this compound.
If planted in ground and left unpruned, it will sprawl out and form low growing clumping mounds, about 3FT wide, making it a great choice for planting under fruit trees to block out weeds.
This is a tropical plant that does not like the cold. Protect smaller/baby plants when temperatures drop below 40F, or bring in doors for the winter.
When can I start harvesting leaves? Leaves can be harvested right away. But I recommend allowing this starter plant to grow to at least 1 foot wide before harvesting leaves.
Growing Conditions
USDA Hardiness Zones: 9-11
Does not like temperatures below 40F. Protect young plants if temperatures drop below 40F.
Perennial evergreen - will lose leaves if exposed to too much cold
Sun: Full sun or partial shade
Soil: Prefers soil heavy in composted organic matter or potting mix
Water: Likes consistent water but not water logged which will cause root rot
Fertilizer: Focus on nitrogen. I like mixing blood meal into the planting hole which is high in nitrogen and promotes lush leafy growth.
