This is absolutely one of my favorite bean crops to grow. Probably the most heavy producing bean variety that I have. Thai Soldier long beans are kind of like a blend of southern peas and green beans. But its actually part of the cow pea or yard long bean family. The pods are extra long and can be eaten just like green beans. It has similar flavor and texture to green beans. Pods are thick and crunchy. The purple color does fade a little when cooked. However, the plants are bushy and have short sprawling vines like southern or cowpeas. Does not require a trellis but will climb up near by objects. I like to plant beneath fruit trees or larger plants like tomatoes. Very very VERY productive. The more you harvest, the more it produces. I also did not find that this plant attracted any pests or diseases. It thrives in the hot, humid, rainy conditions of my Florida garden. Even survived and produced straight thru two hurricanes in a row (Ian and Nicole 2022).

PLANTING
Germination: 4-10 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures are 70-85ºF

Seed Sowing Depth: 1” deep

Sowing: Direct sowing is preferred after the last frost. In warmer climates can also direct sow at end of summer for a fall harvest.

Harvest: I like to harvest when the pods are pencil thickness, but before the pods swell with air and feel softer to the touch. They get thicker than yard long beans.
