UC 157 asparagus, developed at the University of California, Riverside in 1978, is highly prized for its abundant, early harvests and tender, uniform spears. This second-generation (F2 hybrid) variety is renowned for its productivity, yielding three to five dark green spears per mature crown, each 1.5 to 2mm thick, with light leaves. Resistant to rust and fusarium wilt, UC 157 thrives with regular watering and additional nutrients, producing best when deeply watered infrequently to encourage strong root growth. UC 157 F2 is a favorite among gardeners for its reliability and rich, nutty flavor.
Asparagus is a rather large perennial plant with a deep root system. Once it is established, asparagus plants can produce for more than 20 years. Choose a good spot that will be dedicated to your asparagus patch for years to come. It is very difficult to dig them out and move later, if needed. Plant my asparagus plant plugs in a 1 gallon container full of half potting mix and half compost. Plant outside once the plant grows big enough and starts having roots that reach the bottom of the pot. I recommend this because asparagus plants are small and take some time to start putting on growth. They can easily be crowded out by weeds. Plant the 1 gallon sized plants at ground level in rich soil, 2FT apart. Mulch with 3-4 inches of mulch. In colder climates, asparagus will die back naturally from the cold during the winter. This stimulates the plant to send up shoots in the spring. In warmer climates, with barely a winter, it is necessary to cut down asparagus plants to the ground in late winter to stimulate the plant to send up spears in the spring. After cutting back, fertilize and mulch.
Ideal Growing Conditions
USDA Hardiness Zones: 3-10. Protect young plants if temperatures drop below 40F.
Height/width at maturity: Each plant gets 4-6FT tall with a 4FT spread/width.
Sun: Full sun is best for maximum growth and production.
Soil: grows best in loamy soil heavy in composted organic matter.
Water: Monitor young plants and keep consistent water.
Fertilizer: Fertilize in early spring to encourage new shoot growth
Harvest: It will take 2-3 years for a plant this size to start producing. You can start harvesting spears once they are finger thick.
