Grow your own tropical fruit at home with this live pineapple plant called White Jade. This is a highly sought after Hawaiian variety because it boosts so many awesome features in one. It is a low acid cultivar, meaning it will taste super sweet. It also has a completely edible core - meaning the core is not so hard and fibrous like other varieties. Lastly, leaves are thronless, which is very helpful when it comes to weeding around plants or applying fertilizer in the pineapple patch. Pineapples are part of the bromeliad family so they do not require much attention to thrive/fruit. This listing is for a live pineapple plant. It can take 9 to 24 months (very dependent on growing conditions) for the plant to reach maturity and produce fruit.
Benefits of Growing the White Jade Pineapple:
Flavor: You have not experienced full pineapple flavor, unless you have eaten a home grown, ripened on the plant, pineapple. The flavor is super sweet with lower acid than regular pineapples.
Easy to grow: Whether you're an experienced gardener or just starting, this pineapple plant is suitable for all skill levels. Pineapple plants don't have many pest issues or requirements to thrive. Plus this variety has thornless leaves.
Versatile indoor or outdoor plant: In colder zones below USDA garden zone 9, pineapple plants can be grown in containers and then brought inside once temperatures start to fall below 50F. Treat it like a tropical houseplant. Consider a more cold tolerant cultivar like Florida Special. Zones 9 and up can safely plant pineapples outdoors.
Perennial food crop: Pineapples are perennial plants that will survive for many years in warmer climates. They make the perfect low maintenance addition to a food forest or to incorporate into permaculture based gardens.
Plant Care:
Sunlight: Place your pineapple plant in a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of bright sunlight each day. If your in a hot climate like Florida, pineapples do much better if they get some afternoon shade. My pineapple patch grows under other trees.
Watering: Maintain moderately moist soil, watering the plant thoroughly whenever the top inch of soil feels dry.
Soil: Pineapples don't require rich soil to thrive. I plant mine in Florida native sandy soil, with no amendments, and they grow just fine with a few applications of fertilizer per year.
Fertilization: Feed your pineapple plant with a balanced fertilizer every 2-3 months to promote healthy growth and fruit production.
