Winged Bean Seeds aka Dragon Bean - Heirloom Vining Bean Vegetable Seeds

Winged beans are a severely under utilized veggie crop in the United States that I wish more gardeners would try out. This plant produces thick and crunchy pods that are best harvested at 6 inches long or below. Despite its spiky appearance, its texture is just like a crisp raw green bean. The flavor reminds me of a cross between green beans and cucumbers. This humble bean packs a protein punch just like the popular soybean. Every bit of the plant is loaded with protein - even the flowers hit up to 15%! Winged beans thrive in hot and rainy environments. Winged beans are triggered to start flowering once the day light hours start to decrease in fall. Therefore, direct sow beans in summer (June) so the plants are a nice big size by the time fall arrives. You will start harvesting in fall and winter. Because of this, I recommend growing winged beans in warm winter climates (no snow or hard freezes), to ensure you will get a harvest, like zones 9-12. Grow them just as you would pole or vining beans. Vines can get around 12-15FT long. It is sensitive to cold and is therefore treated more like a long lived annual. It is perennial in frost free areas. Eat them just as you would any regular green bean but they really shine in Asian recipes like stir-fries.

Winged beans also go by these names: dragon bean, winged pea, princess bean, goa beans, asparagus pea, four-sided beans, cigarillas, kecipir, four-angled bean, Manila bean, Hunan winged bean, and four-cornered bean.
