Yerba mate is a species of holly that is native to South America. It is an evergreen plant that is often grown for its leaves, which are used to make a caffeinated beverage. It is known for it's energizing properties and numerous health benefits. Grow your own source of this powerful herb right at home. Plants are shipped live and are ready to be potted as soon as they arrive. With proper care and attention, your Yerba Mate plant can provide you with an endless supply of fresh Yerba Mate leaves for years to come.

Planting & Caring for your Yerba Mate plants

Climate: Yerba mate plants are tropical plants that require warm temperatures and high humidity. They grow best in areas with an average temperature of 70-80°F (21-27°C) and relative humidity of 60-80%. They are also sensitive to frost, so make sure to protect them during cold weather.

Soil: Yerba mate plants prefer well-drained, acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. The soil should have a pH level of 4.5 to 5.5. You can add organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure to the soil to improve its quality.

Water: Yerba mate plants require regular watering to keep the soil moist. Water the plants deeply once or twice a week, depending on the weather and soil moisture. Avoid overwatering as it can lead to root rot.

Fertilizer: Yerba mate plants benefit from regular fertilization during the growing season. Use a balanced fertilizer that is high in nitrogen to promote leaf growth. Apply the fertilizer every two to three weeks during the growing season.

Pruning: Yerba mate plants can be pruned to maintain their shape and promote bushy growth. Prune the plants in early spring before new growth starts. You can also remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches at any time.

Pests and diseases: Yerba mate plants can be susceptible to pests such as spider mites, scale insects, and aphids. To control these pests, use insecticidal soap or neem oil. Yerba mate plants can also be affected by fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and leaf spot. To prevent these diseases, avoid overhead watering and maintain good air circulation around the plants.
