"Big Sum" XL Slicing Chinese Broccoli aka Kailaan or Gailan Seeds
Brassica oleracea var alboglabra ‘Big Sum’
Listing is for 1 packet of minimum 25 seeds

Chinese Broccoli, also known as Kailaan or Gai Lan, is a delicious and versatile Asian green that’s perfect for adding flavor and nutrients to your garden and kitchen. Chinese broccoli is easier to grow than standard heading broccoli, because it is grown for its leafy greens and stems (instead of waiting for a head to form). The flavor reminds me of a mix of broccoli and asparagus. The "Big Sum" variety was bred to produce extra thick stems, making it easier to slice.  Kailaan is a favorite in stir-fries, soups, Chinese hot pot, and steamed dishes. It’s much easier to grow than heading types of broccoli and thrives in cooler weather, making it ideal for spring and fall planting. Harvest when stalks are 8-10 inches tall for the best flavor and texture.

Chinese broccoli goes by many other names such as: cai ro, chair lan, Chinese kale, gailaan, gai lan, gailon, gelancai, guy lon, jie lan, kailaan, kai lan, kai lan tsoi, kairan, and phakkhana.

I have not experienced much pest issues if grown during the correct time of year which is fall thru spring. The only issue I have had was aphids start attacking them late in spring. I have found if I plant kale all over my garden, the aphids will feast on them instead and leave my Asian greens alone. So I use kale as a trap crop.

Follow me on social media because I post a lot of information on how to grow the very same seeds available in my shop. Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok: jerrasgarden.

PLANTING

Germination: 7-14 days

Seed Sowing Depth: 1/4” deep, barely press the seeds into the surface of the soil

Sowing: It is best to direct sow the seeds after your last spring frost date. Or if your located in a hot climate, like South USA garden zones 8 and up, direct sow seeds in October. If you live in colder climates you can grow during the summer as well.

Days to maturity: 60-70 days

Orders are shipped in 1-3 business days excluding holidays or delays due to natural disasters like hurricanes.

Seeds are shipped in bubble mailers so they will not be pushed through USPS roller machines which can damage the seeds. I will not ship seeds in an envelope for this reason.

Seeds will be shipped with no planting instructions to keep seed costs low to the buyer. Germination and plant care information is included in the description. I encourage each gardener to research specifics on how to be successful growing them. I also have lots of information on my TikTok, Instagram and YouTube channel all under the account name jerrasgarden. I started this shop to share my love of certain seed varieties and spread the knowledge of gardening. Please contact me if you can't find information or have additional questions.

Orders with live plants are packed on Mondays and Thursdays (excluding holidays or delays because of natural disasters. Plants are shipped in boxes with packaging material to protect them while they are in transit.

No returns or refunds once shipped. I am not responsible for lost or damaged packages caused by USPS. Since there are so many factors that affect germination and growing success, no refunds or exchanges are allowed once seeds have shipped. These are the same seeds I use in my personal garden so I can attest to their viability. Seeds are fresh season to season.
