Pinkeye Purple Hull Cowpea
Pinkeye Purple Hull Cowpea
Pinkeye Purple Hull Cowpea Heirloom Vegetable Seeds
This is a short bushy cowpea that does not require a trellis. The pods are a vibrant purple color, making them easy to find when harvesting. The peas are a cream color with a pink/purple spot. These cowpeas tolerate the heat and sandy soils of my Florida summer garden very well. They are perfect for planting beneath other crops or fruit trees. Densely plant them so they crowd out weeds. They also serve as an aphid trap crop. I planted a section of these cowpeas in the middle of my garden which attracted the aphids away from other crops surrounding them. This a a sturdy cowpea variety that took on the aphids without much effect and you still get something edible. Just like other peas/bean crops, they do affix nitrogen into the soil. I love to cook these cowpeas with bacon and onions. They have a wonderful creamy and buttery texture. I start direct sowing them in my zone 9B garden in April.
